Ways to stop the ebay and Paypal account thieves this Crimble!

Most of you will be aware of these email phishing scams, but I feel strongly about this and would hope that if it saves just one of you the heartache then it’s worth 5 minutes posting it.

The scammers send out an email that looks like it is from ebay or paypaland is addressed to ‘Dear Paypal eBay Member’, ‘Community Member’ or to your email address. Genuine emails include your full name. They are using similar ones to tell you your bank has suspended your accounts lately too I’ve noticed.

These emails tell you your account has been suspended or it needs verifying then invites you to click on a link. Clicking on this link takes you to a site that is identical to eBay or paypal and when you sign in the scammers then have your username and passwords to hijack your account, they can now be used for unsavoury purposes while you foot the bill.

What can I do to prevent getting caught out by these scams?

1. Never click on ANY link in an email no mater how much it looks like ebay or paypal.

2. Forward the email to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@paypal.com who will respond and tell you if this is a genuine email.

3. For regular users it may be a good idea to download the eBay toolbar this contains an ‘account guard that will show green if the site you are using is a genuine paypal or ebay site.

Hope this is helpful … keep your hard earned cash for yourself and your family this Christmas and don’t give these thieves easy access to your details.

Anorak hood down, sleeves up … questions invited!

The New York Times for sale on eBay

A copy of yesterdays New York Times  announcing the election result for the next US president Barack Obama, for sale on the news stands in the Big Apple for 95p ($1.50) is now for sale on eBay UK for £93.19  ($141.65), great mark up me thinks!

Now it’s been reported on US TV and also the BBC that these are for sale on eBay for $199 each (Anorak can’t see those even on ebay US), no doubt more will appear over the coming days.

A piece of global collectable history.

Anorak thinks the odd Burton Mail about the place just doesn’t bare any comparison ;)

eAuction Anorak moves coat pegs … just temporarily

Well, here we are folks, the eBay Anorak has moved coat pegs temporarily from Typepad to WordPress.  You can read all the previous posts here.  The usual meanderings, so I thought, would have been here from now on, eBay madness, media and ramblings … but don’t settle just yet.

Since moving here a few days ago, I’ve found myself in a new realm of time sapping learning that just has to be absorbed. I have been on typepad since August and was just getting used to it but there are limitations for my future blog intentions and an anoraks gotta know his limitations right?  Why?  So I can exceed them!

So now I am learning about hosting, domains, some bumph about apache and lightspeed (I thought they were North American Indians and something to do with Star Wars) and all these other ‘over my head’ type expressions.

Guess what I found out after moving?  This blog is on WordPress.com and I need to move it to WordPress.org! It’s just mindblowing!

Anorak is off to surf eBay, I’ll attack wordpress etc again tomorrow :/

Albert Hall Tickets and AC/DC Tickets on eBay, which would you buy?

(Originally posted on 17 October 2008)

The BBC website has an interesting article regarding tickets being sold on ebay.

What’s new with that I hear you ask? Well, this article from Radio 4′s You and Yours program is about free concert tickets allocated to exclusive club memberships somehow finding their way onto the ebay site, one of which highlited was the buyer ID alberthalltickets who had nothing to do with the albert hall and selling such tickets at inflated prices. The T&C’s on these memberships and tickets are usually marked as NOT FOR RESALE.

Also today, AC/DC tickets went on sale at 10am and were sold out in no time limited to 2 tickets per application. This is the first tour for 10 years and maybe their last so they are hot  stuff.

I’ve got my two and I’m firmly holding on to them, 507 lots of AC/DC tickets on eBay up for sale at this point already and the cost is unreal, up to £265 for 2 tickets that I paid £93.95 for this morning including P&P etc.

I know ‘supply and demand … ’ etc but ebay have got to make up their mind on ticket sellers or even ‘proper’ ticket sellers should sell on ebay (as other big firms are now doing) aswell as their own sites, using Buy It Now instead of people making money from the real fans who have followed this band for decades and getting ripped off by people making a fast buck!

Anoraks question is, who would you pay £265 for two tickets to see?

Anorak zipped with ticket comfirmation email in inside pocket close to heart and worth it’s weight in gold … priceless ;)

September 25 ebay changes … Don’t panic Mr Mannering!

(Originally posted 3 October 2008)

As far as the ebay changes happening this year and especially those changes to Best Match Search on September 25, there is much unrest among many UK sellers plagued by the Seller Non Performance policy (SNP) suspension for their first few negatives and sales dropping to extreme low levels and a general panic among message board posters.

The Anorak’s position is clear:

I’m watching this space, I’m trusting that ebay know more about the inside global workings of ebay than I do, keeping calm, finding the information and resources to enable me to weather this storm and adapt to the new changes.

eBay gave me a chance to own my own business, be a SAHM at the same time over the last six years I’ve made many good friends and life is lush.

I am not throwing in the towel, I like this kitchen, nothing wrong with hot if you work out ways to fix the air con or even the simplist way to open the window, just read the manual rather than complain about the author.

I’m here to stay for the long haul, if I’m a good enough seller and I continue seeking ways to improve, the brighter the future will become.

Anorak sleeves quickly rolled up and ready for the kitchen heat, Tamebay will help you fix the aircon by decifering the manual  :)

;)

So why an Anorak?

The term ‘Anorak‘ as well as a waterproof coat, is used in the UK as ‘slang’ to describe a person whose apparent interest and gathering of data surrounding their hobby is classed as obsessive and could be boring to another person.

People who wear anoraks in their social life are often stereotyped as ‘trainspotters’ with unimaginative and dull pastimes/hobbies, but to the enthusiast there is nothing else worth talking about.

The anorak feels compelled to talk for hours about their subject to anyone and everyone.

Although I don’t wear an anorak I am an eBay Anorak.

Well, now you know me, what about you? Are you an eBay Anorak too?

;)

Hello world!

This is a blog about everything and anything eBay, anything of interest or general news about my journey through the land of ‘my’ ebay, my personal view on the whacky, quirky and wonderful world of the eBay I love. The places I go to and the people I meet who belong to the eBay community.

I have been an eBay trader since 2002 selling Gemstone & Glass Beads for Jewellery Making from my ebay store and also my website at www.bellysbride.co.uk

This year I enrolled in the Education Specialist Programme and became an Education Specialist Trained by eBay to teach The Basics of eBay Selling. Information on classes, 1 to 1 training etc can be found at www.janebell.co.uk

I hope you will comment on posts, visit some of my recommended sites and hopefully find some help and learning along the way.
